Guitar Tuition

Group lessons are intended for beginners and intermediate students and are structured in basic Guitar picking and chords with elementary music theory used to support Rhythm and Timing as the main platform for lessons.
Individual lessons are arranged according to the student’s ability.

Lessons include:- Guitar tuning, Strumming, Finger-style Picking.
Accompaniment, Recognising chord changes, Writing chord charts. Finding “lost” chords.

Sessions can be recorded for reference onto tape or CD

I first picked up the guitar at the age of 12 and the banjo at 17… That was more than 40 years ago.!!
My public performances began in N.Z.‘s university city, Dunedin, in the 70’s with my brother and another high school friend. . We played mainly clubs and cafes and occasional bars performing the folk music of the day with attempts at bluegrass tunes and promoting less main stream artists..such as The Byrds as a variation. Our performances were based on vocals much more than instrumental expertise and often it showed.

I have always had an ear for vocal arrangements and singing harmonies and over the years have developed my playing to reflect and enhance this.
Into the 80’s & 90’s I became more interested in Roots country and Western Swing in general and developed my banjo in this direction when it suited and took a more serious interest in the Mandolin and Dobro ( acoustic steel) as alternatives. I also joined my first fully fledged bluegrass band during this time where our sources were the likes of The Seldom Scene, JD Crowe , National Bluegrass, and not forgetting Flatt & Scruggs,
I began giving casual lessons in banjo and guitar during this period.

Jump to mid 1999 when we landed in Cairns and quickly caught up with the local bluegrass and country community. It was here I saw a need for banjo tutors.

In 2007 we arrived in Melbourne where I joined the Stringbeans vocal band and in 2011 joined up with The Luau Cowboys under Tom Forsell of the legendary Moonee Valley Drifters.

In 2015 the decision was made to move back to Cairns where I intend to Carry on Teaching (without Syd James and Hattie Jacques)..so come on, give me a call.. I’d love to hear from you..
